Artist's books are works of art realized in the form of a book. This practice-based studio arts course visually examines this specialized genre, offering an in-depth view at traditional and alternative book structures in relationship to narrative content. Lectures and demonstrations introduce students to creative process involved in book making, including traditional and alternative book formats, adhesive and sewn binding structures, archival concerns and methods for generating original images and text. This course satisfies general education requirements in Arts and Humanities and qualifies as an ARTS course. Prerequisite: Honors students only. (Description Last Updated: Winter 2015 (201530))

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify the evolution of book arts and the role of text and imagery in the book throughout history.
  2. Utilize craft techniques as they relate to the book arts by working with appropriate materials and developing structures through studying and researching a variety of formats.
  3. Curate and assemble a group exhibition of works created in class to be shown in conjunction with the University theme.
