This course explores the experience of illness through patient narratives in fiction, biographies and autobiographies. These narratives, in turn, shed light on contemporary medical practice. The course will examine such themes as battle, journey, and rebirth in patients¿ narratives. Satisfies general education requirements in Humanities. Prerequisite: Honors students only. Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify various themes in pathographies.
  2. Apply general concepts from course texts to specific illness narratives.
  3. Explain themes and metaphors associated with descriptions of illness.
  4. Produce several written analyses and present discussion in addition to a longer research presentation that demonstrates critical research and writing skills.
