This course will examine popular film and literature targeting women. Both contemporary "chick lit" and "chick flicks" feature single, urban women in their late 20s and early 30s navigating the minefields of professional life and romantic relationships. This course will trace the development of woman's fiction from Jane Austen's era and film from the "woman's film" of the 1940s. Satisfies general education requirements in Humanities. Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify major authors and works in popular women's fiction and film.
  2. Explain the historical and cultural influences that have shaped popular women's literature and film.
  3. Apply the basic principles of literary study/textual analysis to a variety of texts.
  4. Apply the basic principles of film analysis to a variety of films.
  5. Produce at least one documented research paper demonstrating critical reading, analysis, research and writing skills.
