This general education honors seminar is designed to give students the ability to see or hear news stories about the latest scientific discoveries and current events in science and assess the importance of these issues in our daily lives. Scientific topics may include but are not limited to: medicine, natural sciences, meteorology, climatology, and physics. This course satisfies general education requirement in science. Learning Outcomes

  1. Discuss the scientific underpinnings for scientific topics commonly presented in the news.
  2. Describe how to distinguish valid scientific information from rumor or hype.
  3. Write a critical analysis of scientific topics found in popular media outlets.
  4. Use current scientific literature to support or refute the validity of the scientific topic presented by the popular media and to assess the impact of the topic on our lives.
