First-Year Reading Program

As part of the annual Convocation ceremony, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences hosts the First-Year Reading Program for new NSU undergraduate students. Following Convocation's keynote talk by a visiting distinguished author, students meet in small, faculty-led discussion groups and receive a copy of the speaker's selected book. There may also be an opportunity for students to speak with the author.

The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates by Convocation keynote speaker Wes Moore

The Other by Wes Moore_bookThis is the true story of two boys and the journey of a generation. Author Wes Moore tells the fascinating story of another man who shares his name and much of his personal history. About the same age and raised in the same neighborhood by a single mother, this “other Wes Moore” arrived at a starkly different fate: he now serves a life sentence without parole on murder charges.

Compelled by their similar upbringings, Moore penned this book in an effort to discover how small choices make big differences.
