Academic Societies

What is an Academic Society?

The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences introduces Academic Societies—valuable networks of first-year students growing together with fellow, first-year students. Active involvement in one of the college's Academic Societies will help make your transition into college life a seamless and enjoyable one.

Who is involved?

Every incoming freshman at NSU who has declared a major within the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences will be selected into one of the college's Academic Societies.

What will I do?

As a member of the Academic Society Program, you will network with your peers, participate together in college activities and events, and provide support for each other during your first year at NSU. You’ll also be assigned a Peer Leader, whom you will meet with several times each semester.

What is a Peer Leader?

A Peer Leader is a student within the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences who has demonstrated student success both inside and outside the classroom. They are students who know what it takes to succeed in the first year at NSU and most importantly, they want to help you succeed! Peer Leaders are the facilitators for the Academic Societies and they go through ongoing extensive training and supervision to develop in this role.
Meet your 2012–2013 Peer Leaders.

How do I get started?

Your Peer Leader will contact you via NSU Email the weekend before classes begin to forward his or her contact information to you. Further details about your involvement in the Academic Society Program and the first meeting will be provided at that time.

When will I meet my Peer Leader?

When you respond to your Peer Leader's email prior to classes starting, you may choose a time to meet face to face. Or, meet your Peer Leader at the annual Academic Society Program Kickoff event, which is held during NSU’s Weeks of Welcome (WOW) at the start of the fall semester.

Great! But I still have a question...
