Description
Optometry focuses on the identification, assessment, and treatment of vision disorders. The NSU Doctorate of Optometry (O.D.), offered by the Health Professions Division, trains students for a career in clinical optometry and research in hospitals, private practice, and academic institutions.Requirements
The Dual Admission Program in optometry is restricted to entering freshmen. Candidates are required to pursue a bachelor's degree in biology. They must achieve, at minimum, one of three high school GPA/SAT score combinations: 3.3 GPA/1150 SAT, 3.5 GPA/1100 SAT, or 3.8 GPA/1080 SAT. In addition, candidates must have three years of mathematics (through pre-calculus), three years of science (including biology and chemistry), and four years of English.The program normally consists of three years of undergraduate study and four years of graduate school. After successfully completing the first year of graduate school, students are awarded bachelor’s degrees in Biology.
In addition to an undergraduate studies application, a dual admissions application must be submitted along with three references, one from a high school science teacher, one from a guidance counselor, and one from a professional optometrist. A preadmissions interview is required.
