As part of our mission to prepare students for rich professional careers and active citizenship, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences at Nova Southeastern University frames co-curricular programs and experiences around a broad annual theme that unites our community in interdisciplinary exploration. The academic theme for the 2010-2011 school year is "Identity.”
The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences invites new undergraduate students to join the First-Year Reading Program. Participants will receive free copies of Edwidge Danticat's book The Farming of Bones, have the opportunity to discuss the novel in small reading groups led by faculty members, and hear from the author herself at convocation.

The
Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences invites new undergraduate students to join the First-Year Reading Program. This
year, in anticipation of writer Edwidge Danticat's visit, participants will be reading her book The Farming of Bones (1999). The novel's graceful, deceptively simple prose recounts the 1937 massacre of Haitian workers in the Dominican Republic. Told through the eyes of a young domestic servant, the story of the atrocity becomes one of cultural and spiritual survival.
Student participants will receive a free copy
of the book, which will be mailed at no charge.
Students will participate in small reading groups, giving them the opportunity to discuss the book with their peers and college faculty members.
Students will also have the chance
to hear from the author herself as she delivers the keynote address at NSU’s 2010 Convocation Ceremony. A select
group of participants will be invited to a private seminar dinner with the author.
Participation in the First-Year Reading Program is limited. For consideration in the program, please fill out the below form immediately so we can get the book to you right away!
