Office of Academic Services

General Information and Policies

The Office of Academic Services offers supplemental assistance to students in their current coursework. Course-specific and writing tutoring is FREE to NSU students. Tutoring sessions are one-on-one, interactive, and require active student participation. Prior to tutoring sessions, students should have attended classes and attempted their assignments.

In addition to tutoring, students can be mentored to improve their study skills and learn time management strategies that reinforce the learning process. The Office of Academic Services professional staff use a student-centered holistic approach to mentoring. This approach considers the “whole student” when discussing academic success strategies.

Tutoring is not available for NSU placement tests or CLEP examinations. However, test preparation is provided for the General Knowledge Test.

Course-Specific Tutoring

  • Math
  • Sciences (physics, chemistry, and biology)
  • Business (accounting and economics)
  • Technology (TECH 1110)

Tutoring sessions are designed to improve students’ understanding of course content. Course-specific tutoring sessions neither teach new material nor replace classroom instruction. If a class is missed, students should study the material from the textbook and get the class notes from a classmate. Also, students should use available supplemental resources, such as DVDs or computer tutorial programs (materials for all undergraduate math courses are available at the Office of Academic Services). A tutoring session may be scheduled after students have studied and attempted course assignments. Students should bring specific questions or concerns to their tutoring sessions.

Writing Tutoring

  • Writing (all courses)

Writing Across the Curriculum, NSU’s academic policy, requires that all courses include a significant writing component.  The Office of Academic Services assists students in meeting their writing goals. Students are guided toward becoming more independent writers. The tutors actively engage students in all phases of the writing process. Common topics of discussion include brainstorming, organizing, revising, sentence structure, grammar, and research techniques.

Writing is a process requiring extensive time commitment. Therefore, a tutoring session may not allow for a review of an entire paper. Since tutoring sessions are learning experiences, students are expected to apply what they learn during their tutoring sessions to the remainder of their assignments and to subsequent assignments. Students are encouraged to plan sufficient time for tutoring sessions and independent follow-up revisions. Students are required to bring two double-spaced copies of their paper to each tutoring session. The tutor will make notes on and retain one of the copies.

Appointment Policies

  • Tutoring appointments are 45 minutes long and should be scheduled in advance, either in person or by phone. Walk-in appointments are acceptable, but not recommended because a tutor may be unavailable.
  • Students requesting assistance can:
    • schedule up to three appointments per course, per week (ex: three for COMP 1000 and three for MATH 1030);
    • have no more than two tutoring sessions on any one day (ex: two on Monday and two on Thursday);
    • have no more than six tutoring sessions in total per week.
  • Appointments for the same course can be made only one at a time (ex: student cannot make two COMP 100 appointments at the same time).
  • Students who cannot keep a tutoring appointment must cancel at least three hours prior to the scheduled appointment. Both “late cancellations” (cancelled in fewer than three hours) and “no-shows” (not showing to an appointment) will result in a one-point penalty. If the student accumulates three points, tutoring services will only be provided on a WALK-IN basis for the remainder of that semester.
  • Students who are late for an appointment may receive tutoring for the remaining scheduled time.
  • Students should come to tutoring sessions with all necessary books, notes, and reference materials, and be prepared to ask specific questions.
  • Students are discouraged from bringing children to tutoring sessions. Children must remain in the company of parent or guardian.
  • Cell phones should be turned off during tutoring sessions.

Tutoring Format

  • In-Person Tutoring - Students are encouraged to use in-person tutoring, if available.
  • Online - Students who cannot reach a location where in-person tutoring is available are welcome to use online tutoring.
